My Role

Main Product Designer,

The end product was an internal dashboard that allowed admin to view overall group engagement, overall growth, individual member engagment.

Project Overview

Restvo's goal is to help organizations build a fun, easy-to-use, and intentional learning and mentoring community through mobile technology.

I worked with the Restvo team for several months to design and create a dashboard feature for their admin side of the platform. This dashboard's goal is to give admin users an at-a-glance view of the engagement and effectiveness of their learning programs.

In the beginning, all we knew is that we wanted a dashboard type platform for the admins to be able to assess how their groups and mentorships were doing, down to an individual level. We thought about and researched the different kinds of features our users would find useful, and after many discussions and meetings, it came down to:

  • a group "snapshot"

  • a way to visualize overall group health

  • number of participants and relationships

  • group growth over time

  • individual health

  • a way to contact individuals

The "health" aspect was something we thought about for a long time. At first, we didn't know how to call it, but we wanted to provide some kind of way to easily visualize and call to attention how a person or a group was doing in terms of engagement. Someone suggested a color-coded"health score" which would be calculated by a variety of different things, such as how much they engaged with group content, attendance, feedback they gave, etc. We thought this was a good idea, because then admin users could quickly glance at a group or person's score and get a feel for how they were doing, without sift through many different metrics.

This was the basic architecture of our dashboard feature.

Below are some of my sketches and data visualization ideas from our ideation sessions.

Final Thoughts

I had a great time working with Restvo on this project and it was a challenging experience, designing this unique dashboard feature. Not only did I have to come up with features that we wanted to incorporate but also had an opportunity to think about the backend of these features. For example—what metrics would be used to pull the health score? What kind of metrics would admin users like the health score to be based on? These were things that I needed to consider and things the engineering team asked me about.

Additionally, since this project was heavily data-based, it challenged my creativity and ability to display information in an easy-to-digest way. Admin users using this platform would have a lot of groups to look through, and then a lot of users. I had to think hard about what kind of data to prioritize and think through ways to display it on a small phone screen so that it wouldn't feel overwhelming or create an "endless scroll" kind of scenario. There was so much iteration involved and was definitely not linear or smooth process, but I learned a lot from the suggestions and feedback given through the process and was very grateful for it! I love the challenge & beauty of displaying data, so I was just so happy that I got a chance to be a part of a project that focused on that.
